Class Basics:

Tameshigiri: As pictured below, Tatami Mats are placed on a stand for the student to practice his or her cutting. Cuts are judged based several factors such as angle and speed.

Kata: There are several basic forms one must learn in Toyama Ryu just as in most martial arts. You will typically learn Kata before learning tameshigiri.

Student Responsibilities: Each student must help maintain the dojo floors at the end of class as well as assist with clean up before an after Tameshigiri.

Equiptment Needed:

For the intro class,only a wooden sword, called a bokuto or boken is needed. In the advanced cutting class, a cutting sword, or Shinken is needed. Students in this class will be required to cut at least 1 goza, or rolled tatami mat, a week. Cost for the mats is $5.00 We prefer that students buy their equipment at East Coast Martial Art Supplies as they have sanctioned and safe materials.

Class Times:

Wednesday: Begginers Class: 6:30-7:15PM; You may wear street clothing or any type of martial arts uniform to this class.

Intermediate Class: 7:30-8:30; Available to anyone who completes the four week intro class. Must have a black hakama, white karate gi top and Iai obi. Also must have their own Iai To. Iai To (dull katanas) are available for rent. $5.00 per class. Cost is 65.00 a month. Dues must be paid on first Wed. each month. Paypal payments available

Friday: 8:00PM-10:00PM; Only with direct permission from Sensei Bob elder. Must posses an Iai To and authorized cutting sword. Also must have a complete Iai do-gi.

Cost is 75.00 a month. Tatami (goza) are 5.00 each. You must cut a minimum of 2 a week

Our Toyama Dojo also teaches the Kata and cutting patterns a s practiced by the All Japan Batto Do Renmei , or, ZNBDR. We are authorized to teach this as practiced in Japan and have an authorized US version for our own testing standards and seminars. Currently these are offered in Orlando as well as Palm Bay and Vero Beach Fl, along with NYC and Minneapolis
